Wireless Enhancement is managed by the Office of Information of Technology (OIT) and planned for the common good of the University of Minnesota (University). Additional Details about enhancement are available online.
The University wireless network has grown over the years through a co-op implementation by many departments that had need for service. From 2008-2009 OIT replaced all access points (APs) on campus regardless of type, age, or original ownership. OIT's ownership of wireless infrastructure is critical for standardization of wireless service so the University can provide security, roaming, voice, and additional wireless services in the future. The installation, management, service, and support of the University's wireless network are the sole responsibility of OIT and protected by University policy.
OIT Wiring Standards require all new University building construction and renovations to install wireless service providing both the coverage and capacity OIT recommends. University construction initiative groups may contact an OIT representative through our Order Services Form.
The University's wireless system is able to track, isolate, and disable service to APs that do not belong on the network. In order to assure the University's wireless standards are met and future initiatives are possible, OIT disables Internet access for connections to unauthorized wireless APs on the University network.
