What's Inside

Resources

Welcome

The University of Minnesota Virtual Private Network (VPN) is
the centrally managed Office of Information Technology
(OIT) service that allows a computer to connect to the
University network without using an Ethernet connection.
A VPN connection appears as though you are inside the
University network and allows access to its internal
resources.

VPN client software is available free of charge to all
students, faculty, and staff. OIT encourages all students,
faculty, and staff to install the VPN client on their own
personal computers. There are over 17,000 VPN clients
currently deployed on Windows PCs, Macintoshes, and
various Linux and UNIX computers.

VPN Hardware and Software Replacement

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010 the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is replacing the existing University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus-wide Virtual Private Network (VPN) hardware and software. The upgrade is needed because the current equipment and software supporting the service are no longer supported by the vendor. Replacing this equipment and software with a more robust, state-of-art solution ensures that students, faculty, and staff continue to have secure access to University resources from off-campus sites. The replacement takes place in two phases. See our Campus Implementation section for project details.
