Best Practices

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) recommends using VPN service in the following situations:

• When connecting to the University network from a non-University of Minnesota Internet provider (ISP), for example AOL or MSN while using a cable modem or DSL
   
• When using a wireless connection to connect to the University networkp
   
• While transmitting sensitive data (for example passwords, credit card information, social security numbers, or any confidential information) while connected to the Internetp
   
• While accessing restricted University resources

Disconnecting from the VPN server when it is not in use is a best practice of responsible use of University resources.
