Windows Operating System Upgrade

The Windows operating system upgrade is available through the campus agreement program for computers owned by the U of M. Check with your departmental technical support person before upgrading your operating system.

Windows 7 Enterprise - The OIT Software License Team announces that the Windows 7 image is now available for University of Minnesota owned workstations. The Windows 7 image has been configured to activate against an OIT managed, Microsoft Key Management Service (KMS) Server. No other license codes are required but a University network connection is required to activate against the KMS server within the first 30 days following installation and then subsequently at least once every 180 days. Microsoft's licensing process changed with Windows Vista and Server 2008 and now uses KMS for activation. More  information about Windows Volume Activation can be found on the Microsoft site.  OIT highly recommends that local IT staff evaluate this new release and  determine when the collegiate/administrative unit will upgrade based upon their needs, keeping in mind that many software vendors (including Microsoft) have not yet released their official Windows 7-compatible applications.

Older Windows OS upgrade versions are also available. Download the software.

Advantages

The advantages of participating in the Microsoft Campus Agreement Program include the following.

  • Savings: By purchasing software for the entire University of Minnesota, the University is able to save a significant amount of money.
  • Software Compliance: The Microsoft Campus Agreement ensures software compliance for the entire University.
  • Decreased Administrative Support: The Microsoft Campus Agreement eliminates the need for meticulous record-keeping by departments of what software is installed on what computer, etc.
  • Upgrade and Downgrade Rights: The software license agreements include all vendor upgrades during the year of the software license agreement, as well as downgrade rights.
  • Future Software Saving: When departments order computers in the future, they will not need to upgrade the operating system or add an Office product to the price of the computer. We suggest ordering the computer with the standard Microsoft operating system the manufacturer is offering and then upgrading the operating system to the most current one, and installing Microsoft Office software when you receive the computer.
