ArcGIS Advanced (previously licensed as ArcView and ArcInfo) enables you to analyze your data and author geographic knowledge to examine relationships, test predictions, and ultimately make better decisions. ArcGIS is available in three license levels—Basic, Standard, or Advanced (formerly ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo, respectively). These license levels share the same core applications, user interface, and development environment. Each license level provides additional GIS functionality as you move from Basic to Standard to Advanced. At the University we are licensed at the highest available level (Advanced). Departmental- and collegiate-level licenses also include Server and Online.

The Autodesk Education Master Suite is a program for institutions that provides a wide range of Autodesk design tools, including AutoCAD, for teaching in the fields of manufacturing, industrial design, architecture, construction, and civil engineering. 

Version 2013 is expected in late May or early June 2012.  Collegiate-wide install level pricing of $5,000 will become available July 1, 2012.

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics.

R-Wipe & Clean securely removes files, browser caches, temporary files, recently used file listings, and previously deleted files that are in the computer's unallocated space.

RefWorks is a Web-based citation manager provided by the University Libraries that enables you to: 1) create your own or a group's bibliographic database by importing references from MNCAT and many other databases or enter them using a template; 2) automatically generate bibliographies in all major styles and then export them as several document types; and 3) attach one or more files to individual records in your account.

The SAS Education Analytical Suite is an integrated system of software products that enables the programmer to perform: data entry, retrieval, management, and mining; report writing and graphics; statistical analysis; business planning, forecasting, and decision support; operations research and project management; quality improvement; applications development; data warehousing; and platform independent and remote computing.

As of 02/28/13: SAS Inc. does not support the installation of SAS on computers running Windows 8, but has stated that they are working on support for Windows 8. Check their supported systems information and watch for news on Windows 8 support.

SharePoint Server is a software platform for collaboration and web publishing that combines a number of capabilities under a single server. It enables users to perform a number of common tasks, such as publishing a web site or intranet, searching for content, managing content, or creating applications, but without having to install a separate server for each function.

Windows 8 is expected to be released in October 2012.  We will update this page when we know more.  A lot of questions are coming in about Windows to Go; all we know is what has been posted on various external websites. We will also include more information and useful links to Windows to Go, once we learn more.

WinZip software "compresses" large files into smaller files for transfer over a network or for storage.

Because modern Windows and Mac operating systems now have integrated zipping capability, most people no longer require special software to un/zip. Usage of the WinZip software previously offered through OIT has dwindled considerably, so the maintenance contract will not be renewed. We are providing some information on useful alternatives to WinZip under the Ordering & Details section of this page.

X-Win32 server software connects Windows PCs with UNIX servers (including Sun Solaris, HP/UX, IBM AIX, SCO, and FreeBSD) and with Linux machines running Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake, and other distributions of Linux.

December 1, 2012: Due to decreased use of this product at the University of Minnesota, it is no longer cost effective to hold a site licensed contract with the vendor StarNet for it.  Departments can obtain this license for University-related work directly from the vendor at a discounted per installation price.  Additional/alternative products, some no charge, are listed within this page.
