Getting Started

Before or as you first arrive at the University as an incoming student, follow these steps to get started using campus computing and online resources. Please note that to complete some items, you first must register for courses.

Before You Arrive on Campus

  1. Activate your accounts for campus resources.

    See the Internet Account Options pages.

    Active Directory: to access computer labs
    NetFiles: online file storage
    UMCal: your online calendar
    TXT-U: emergency messages via text message

  2. Get your computer ready for the University network.

    Follow the steps on the Securing a Personal Machine page

  3. Download and install Symantec AntiVirus (SAV).

    See the Antivirus and Firewall Software page.

  4. Order and pick up discounted Microsoft software (optional).

After You Arrive on Campus

  1. Learn about your account and Internet ID.

    See the E-mail and Internet Accounts Guides pages.

    Your Internet ID is your unique account name and provides access to all University network resources including myU portal, e-mail, and more.

  2. Protect your passwords.

    See the U of M Internet Password page.

    To protect your account's privacy and security, passwords cannot be transmitted via e-mail.

  3. Set up your University e-mail account.

    Your University e-mail account is the official means of communication at the U of M. Your University e-mail address is:

    [your Internet ID]@umn.edu.

    Find e-mail setup guides at E-mail Configuration Guides or check your e-mail from the Web with U of M Web Based E-mail.

  4. Manage your account.

    See the Internet Account Options pages.

    Set up your account, change or reset your password, manage your e-mail options, and view blocked incoming e-mails, or activate Active Directory, NetFiles, and UMCal accounts.
