IT Governance

 The University of Minnesota's IT governance framework consists of enterprise-level processes and relationships that lead to reasoned decision making in the use of information technology. This framework is used to ensure that IT is aligned with University strategy; delivers value to the University; and manages risk, performance, and resources.

The University’s vice president and chief information officer (VPCIO) leads the implementation of the IT governance framework and its associated processes, working in tandem with University leaders as shown above.

Project and Portfolio Management services support IT governance bodies by helping to monitor and review the unified portfolio of enterprise projects. This oversight relates to individual projects and the interrelationship between projects and the portfolio as a whole, including:

• Monitor progress by exception
• Proactively communicate project status
• Provide "gating" reviews at key milestones
• Harvest lessons learned at project close
• Post implementation, review actual vs. hoped for goals of the project, actual vs. budgeted costs of resources
• Optimize schedules among projects
• Monitor interdependencies between projects
