As mobile devices become lighter and more affordable and wireless access continues to expand on campus and around the globe, people are keeping their mobiles as constant companions. Mobiles store vast amounts of data and give us instant access to news, information, entertainment, and social interaction. At the next 20 by 20, we will explore how the University of Minnesota can make the most out of mobiles to teach, learn, and enhance our daily lives. What are the possibilities for mobile technology at the University of Minnesota?

How does collaboration deepen learning, teaching and research? How do technologies create possibilities for collaboration in our work? Educational technologies at the University of Minnesota offer many opportunities for students, faculty and staff to work together: online or face-to-face, synchronously or asynchronously. Yet technologies are not inherently collaborative--they only have the potential to foster collaboration. The key is to understand the potential of the technology being used and to develop skills and good practices in working with others. For the next session of 20 by 20, presentations will focus on the ways in which technology-enhanced collaboration enriches teaching, learning, research and work at the University of Minnesota.

What is: open education, open access, open data? How do open education, open access, and open content principles already inform teaching and research at the University of Minnesota? How are open education, open access, and open content related to our land grant mission? How might copyright help us frame discussions about sharing our work in an academic context?

Chances are, you used Google in some way today, whether it was to check your Gmail, look at a YouTube video, or find out where that movie you wanted to see is showing. Or perhaps you collaborated with a classmate or colleague on writing a document, shared photos with family, or had a video chat with a friend who lives hundreds of miles away. You may have used Google Scholar to search for articles for a research paper, contributed to a Google map for a project, and then checked your Gmail again, this time on your phone. Because Google pervades life online, it shapes our practices even when we're not using it. What role does Google play in research, teaching, and learning at the University of Minnesota?

Pecha Kucha (pronounced “peh-CHAK-cha”) presentations are narrated slideshows that are meant to be concise, informative, and entertaining. Pecha kucha means “chit chat” or “the sound of conversation” in Japanese and was developed by two architects from Tokyo who were fed up with bad PowerPoint presentations. Presentations move quickly as each presenter narrates 20 slides that are displayed for 20 seconds each.
This event is sponsored by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and the Academic Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC).
